Sometimes the most serious and hateful crimes are almost invisible. Years ago slaves were tortured and were treated as property. Slaves were able to be bought or sold. Slavery was practiced in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build economic foundations of the new nation. Slavery was banned from the United States almost a century ago. Slaves were forced into sex work and other work that was against their will. Today this crime is called "human trafficking" it has gone on for decades but just recently it has caught public attention. The modern day slaves include undocumented immigrants with fear of deportation and children and adults unable to report their condition. Authorities believe that there are about 10,000 minors involved in sex work. They are forced to work without pay, under threat of violence, and unable to walk away. Many of them are tricked by traffickers who pull in vulnerable people with false promises of good jobs or education. Some of them are even marched to work at gun point. You can find them in brothels, factories, mines, and farm homes. We can end slavery! Slavery? Why have it? Businesses can clean up their supply chain and the consumers must demand slavery free products. Slavery is a horrible crime and must be stopped. Why make people just like us suffer? They are no different than we are.
